Apple refresh...sort of.
Yesterday Apple refreshed a lot of it's products. In fact the list of un-refreshed items is probably shorter. Lets take a quick look at the updates, which will be filled with my own subjective opinions.
In brief there were 4 "major" hardware updates with updates to the Mini, iMac, Mac Pro, and Airport/Time Capsule.
The Mini's biggest change is the new GeForce 9400M integrated graphics, the same used in the new Macbooks. A Mini DisplayPort and 5 USB ports. Two models with the base being $599, and the high end at $799. I think that the low end model is decently priced, but the high end? $200 for an extra 200GB of storage and another gig of ram! Come on Apple we're in a recession. Stop hurting your uninformed naive customers.
The iMac. Wait...something changed? 4 models with the lowest 2 having the same integrated graphics as the Mini and Macbook? I think I'll take my last gen aluminum iMac thank you.
The Mac Pro. Well I'm glad that my little over a year old Mac Pro is still worth holding on too. I think that the overall hardware refresh is good for the Mac Pro. Now sporting the Nehalem Xeon Processor, and allowing DDR3 ram. Video card upgrades as well, but it looks like they will be available for the older models. Now lets talk about the Pro price. If you go to http://www.apple.com/macpro/ and click on buy now and configure, there is a difference of $2,600 from the low end 8 core and the high end 8 core. That's a $2,600 difference for just the processor and nothing else. HEY APPLE RECESSION!?!?
The Airport and Timecapsule. They both have dual-band support sporting g/b and n, which means your iPhone and Apple TV won't slow down your connection anymore. Guest networking creates a secondary network with a separate password if you wish to share with friends, family or your neighbor. You can also access files from a drive connected to these devices if you have a MobileMe account, essentially making it a NAS.
I'm glad I know longer drink the kool ade. It allows me to make decisions using my brain instead of my wallet. Keep it up Apple, I think that is the sound of Windows 7 whispering my name.

This was a great review, and I'm glad I read it before I went out and purchased an iMac. haha I got another Mini, which I love by the way, the dual monitors is the fucking shit, and since it has the same integrated graphics card as my Macbook, no need to hook it up to my monitor to WoW it up on the 22 incher. haha
Great review, man Apple is FUCKING UP!
Oh yeah, one last thing, if you go and buy a mini, makes sure that you check the prices online, the dude at the store told me that you only get $20 for the student discount, I showed him it was $50. Reluctantly but surely enough he gave me the discount. Sorry Ben, I would rather spend the extra $40 dollar and not have to wait a week. Patience is not part of my strong suits.
The kool-aid is not in my cup any more. I'm ready for a quad core imac, but Apple just doesn't want to take my money. Oh well, the eee box is looking kindof fun.
Do you think Steve Job's absence will affect Apple?
