Browser Speed Test Updates

It didn't take long before more testing results came in, and this time the testing was done by one of my favorite tech sites: Lifehacker. Basically they ran a more comprehensive set of tests on Safari 4 beta, Chrome, Firefox 3 and Firefox 3.1 Beta 2, IE8, IE7, and Opera 9.6 and the results look interesting. Apple wasn't lying when they said their JavaScript engine was 3x faster than FF 3, but they didn't come out on top. These tests show that Google's Chrome is the speed freak of the pack when it comes to JavaScript. Safari 4 beta did have the fastest CSS scores, but Chrome placed first in two out of the three tests conducted. Keep in mind, Safari 4 is still in beta and as such still has room for more improvement, but it looks promising none the less.

Shorty’s Fun Facts #3 – How do I turn on Automatic Login on Windows?

Well, that’s done through the Advanced User Accounts control panel. Now the only way to get to the Advanced User Accounts control panel if your machine is not on a domain, is to go to the Start Search (Run if you’re using XP) and type control userpasswords2 (not typing the “2” will take you to the usual user accounts page). Then uncheck the box that says “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.” Then when you click OK/Apply it will ask you to input the user name and password for the account that you want Windows to login to at startup. And that’s it, you’re done!

*Note that this does not work if your computer is joined to a domain. You can still turn on auto login if you are on a domain, but it has to be done through the Registry Editor. Microsoft explains how to do this on their Support website here.

Safari 4.0 Beta

It's been a couple of days since Apple released Safari 4 for beta, and just from seeing the screen shots it looks really nice. It's what I would expect from Apple, elegant and robust; two features that I have yet to see from Microsoft. Some of the new features include: Cover Flow for bookmarks and history, Smart Address Field (similar to Firefox 3's address bar), a Web Inspector that will really come in handy for web developers, and the list goes on and on (Apple's Safari website lists 150 features).
Not only does it include really cool eye candy, but a revamped JavaScript engine which currently makes it the fastest browser in the market, beating even Mozilla's experimental browser Minefield. According to ZDnet.com, they ran the SunSpider benchmarking tests for browsers on Safari 4, Firefox 3, Minefield, Chrome, Opera 9.6, and IE8, and Safari 4 came out on top. It'll be a matter of time before more testing results come out and I can make a definitive conclusion about which browser is the fastest, but in the mean time I am going to proceed to download Safari 4 beta to my windows box and check it out. I'll keep you guys posted on my review.

Shorty’s Fun Facts #2 –I can have Windows connect to a Network Drive at login, but how can I make my Mac do that?

Well it depends on the OS. I’m gonna tell you how in Leopard. Well go to System Preferences>Accounts> then select your account then click the login items tab. Now if you are already connected to the drive then drag it off your desktop and into the login items window. Or click the plus sign and from the drop down menu at the top, select your computer, then select the drive and click add. For easier access make sure the user name and password for the drive is saved in your keychain.

Shorty’s Fun Facts #1 - Why does Vista take so much longer to empty the Recycle Bin than Leopard takes to empty the Trash?

Well did you know that when you “empty the trash” in Leopard the files aren’t actually deleted? Instead they are marked for overwrite. So for example when I delete 5GB worth of data, the files are actually still there. Except now Leopard will overwrite those files with new ones you create at some point. Who knows when they will actually get overwritten though. You could potentially still have files on your hard drive that you thought you deleted weeks ago. That’s why there is also the option for “Secure Empty Trash” this option will really delete the files. That’s why it takes a lot, lot longer.

Shorty’s Fun Facts

I’m going to start a series called “shorty’s fun facts”. I’ll try to post two a week. Let me know what you guys think of ‘em.

This is pretty funny, check it out
